Upgrading from vCenter 5.0 to 5.5 - agent backwards compability?

I am in the process of upgrading from 5.0 to 5.5.  The way I did this is I have a standalone vCenter VM.  I cloned this (ran sysprep, etc) and then upgraded the clone so as not to touch anything we have in production.

When asked to upgrade the agents on the hosts, I chose that I will upgrade them manually at a later time.

So first question, are the agents backwards compatible with 5.0?  Or once I upgrade them, will only vCenter 5.5 be able to connect?

What is the best way to rollback to the 5.0 agent if I encounter any issues after upgrading the agent to 5.5?

In my vCenter 5.5 web client, I was going to try to add the hosts anyway just to see if there was connectivity there (figuring an error message might tell me that much) but I don't see a way to manually add them.  It appears when I select hosts, it starts scanning for them (and finds nothing which is what I'd expect).

I just want to make sure this appears to be behaving correctly given that there are no 5.5 host agents out there.

Thanks much for the help.
