I just started doing some research on compatibility and requirements for a vcenter server 5.1 to 5.5 upgrade and I'm a bit confused. I'm also not a database guy so the problem could be me. :/
Anyway, I asked a dba what database type/version we currently use and he told me Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP3 64 bit.
So I head over to the Solution/Database Interoperability page ( VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes ) and select that exact version and I don't get the happy green check mark. Bummer. I guess I'm not upgrading.
Then I happen to stumble on to this article ( http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1003882 ) that was updated about 2 weeks ago and includes vCenter Server 5.5 (in right margin) and it includes the following for supported databases.
- SQL Server 2008 32-bit Standard, Enterprise SP2
- SQL Server 2008 64-bit Standard, Enterprise SP2
This seems strange to me that SP2 would be supported but not SP3, so I head back over the the Interoperability Matrix page and select the above four choices (Std and Ent for each 32/64 bit) and none of them are compatible according to this page. Not the SP2 ones or the SP3 one.
Should I just assume that kb on minimum system requirements I found above is simply incorrect?
